Presidents sweep Tomcats; Cunningham ties W&J hit record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson collected a PAC softball sweep of Thiel following 9-1 (5 innings) and 6-3 victories over the Tomcats on Friday afternoon.

Senior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham had three hits during the doubleheader to increase her career total to 181 and tie Amanda Howard for the W&J all-time record.

W&J (18-8, 10-4, PAC) did a majority of its damage in both games during the first inning.  In the opener, the Presidents scored five times in the first, the first two of which came in on Emily Watson's two-run double.  Jen Bahm followed with a two-run single and the fifth run scored after a Tomcat error.

Abby Cunningham singled home two runs in the fourth inning and Bahm tacked on another two-run single for the Presidents' final runs.

Thiel (12-18, 5-9 PAC) ended Madison Rotto's shutout bid with a run in the fifth inning.  Rotto allowed just five hits and struck out two.  Bahm led the lineup with two hits and four RBI, while Watson went 3-for-3 and scored twice.  Sadie Marak went 2-for-2 and Courtney Roperti scored a pair of runs.

Abby Cunningham's RBI double scored her sister, Kelsey Cunningham, in the top of the first inning of game two.  Rotto delivered a two-run double for a 3-0 advantage.

The Tomcats tied the game with two runs in the third and another during the fourth, but Abby Cunningham and Rotto both notched RBI singles in the fifth.  Rotto added her fourth RBI in the seventh with a single that scored Marak.

Rotto went 3-for-4 at the plate and tossed the final three innings of one-hit ball to earn the save.  Krista McCartney improved to 6-3 on the mound after allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings of work.  Watson scored two more runs in game two, while Marak had two hits and scored twice.  Kelsey Cunningham has two of her hits in the second contest, including a double in the sixth which tied the program record for career base hits.
