Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior shortstop
Kelsey Cunningham became the Presidents' softball career hit leader during the second inning Tuesday of an 8-0 (5 innings) victory over Waynesburg at Brooks Park. W&J (20-8, 12-4 PAC) completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in game two.
Cunningham finished the opening game with three hits, including the record-breaking single she lined into left field with two outs in the second. With 184 career hits, Cunningham moves ahead of 2009 graduate Amanda Howard on the W&J career list.
"The record is something I've worked very hard for through the years," said Cunningham after the game. "To do this on our home field and during a big win makes it special. Being the all-time hit leader at W&J is a really nice honor. Ever since I was a little kid, I've worked hard to be able to reach goals like this."
Cunningham's sister, freshman catcher
Abby Cunningham, provided the Presidents' first run of the opening game in the bottom of the first inning when her single plated
Courtney Roperti.
Roperti's RBI double scored
Kelsey Cunningham in the fourth for a 2-0 lead and W&J exploded for six runs in the fifth to end the game.
Kelsey Cunningham, Breana Gleason and Roperti all had RBI doubles, while
Morgan Figura singled home a pair.
Madison Rotto fired a one-hit shutout for her seventh pitching win of the year. She struck out three and issued just one walk.
In game two, Rotto provided the only runs the Presidents would need with a two-run homer during the fourth inning. W&J added a pair of runs in the fifth following a Waynesburg error and
Emily Watson delivered an insurance run in the seventh with a RBI single that scored
Sadie Marak.
Krista McCartney nearly hurled a shutout, but Waynesburg scored an unearned run on a two-out single in the seventh. McCartney finished with six strikeouts and limited the Yellow Jackets (8-22, 4-12 PAC) to just three hits.
Roperti, Rotto and
Abby Cunningham all had two hits for W&J in the second contest, while Marak scored twice.
