Krista McCartney pitched her second-straight, shutout of the day and third-seeded Washington & Jefferson College forced a second Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Tournament championship game after defeating second-seeded Geneva College 1-0 Friday afternoon at Thomas More College.
The Presidents (24-10), who beat top-seeded Thomas More by the same 1-0 margin earlier in the day, could earn their first PAC softball championship since 2006 (third overall) and first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament by defeating the Golden Tornadoes (23-15) again at 3:15 pm.
W&J scored the only run of the game in the first inning.
Kelsey Cunningham led off with a single, advanced to second base on
Sadie Marak's ground out.
Emily Watson then delivered a run-scoring single, her team-leading 30th RBI of the year.
McCartney allowed a leadoff single in the first inning, two base hits in the fifth and one single in the seventh during her third shutout of the season. She improved her record to 11-3 overall and her ERA was lowered to 2.24. McCartney struck out three Golden Tornadoes and did not issue a walk.
Madison Rotto, who was forced to leave the Thomas More game with an injury, came back to play versus Geneva and had two of W&J's five hits.
Samantha Johnson (19-9) suffered the loss for Geneva, allowing five hits and one walk (3K). Ashley Davis (2-for-3) was the only Golden Tornado player with a multi-hit game.
