Box Score Washington, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team opened the 2014 campaign with a 2-1 win over Wittenberg at Cameron Stadium.
With the win, the Presidents begin the season 1-0 while Wittenberg drops to 0-1.
Both goals by the Presidents came in the early stages of the contest.
Lauren Brown scored 7:45 into the contest on a deflection to the lower right corner with the assist to
Kelsey Bowman. Just under nine minutes later,
Catherine Beaudoin scored her first goal of the season and 24th of her career, moving her into sole possession of seventh place on the W&J all-time goal list.
Caroline Kallos picked up the assist after her shot was redirected by Beaudoin.
Thanks to a ball-control centered attack and strong defensive play, the Presidents held a dominating 16-1 edge on shots through the first 35 minutes.
In the second half, W&J played with a lead and Wittenberg picked up the energy, out-shooting the hosts 11-5, but the Tigers only found the back of the net on one occassion, with a score by Kelly McLean at the 63:37-mark, on a deflection from a shot by Kim Loofbourrow.
For the game, W&J out-shot Wittenberg, 21-12, and held a 12-10 advantage on penalty corners.
Freshman
Karlie Baran earned the win in her first career start, making six saves and allowing just one goal in 70 minutes of action. Sarah Brownell took the loss for Wittenberg, making 12 saves in going the distance.
The Presidents return to action on Sunday, Aug. 31 with a 4 p.m. game at Oberlin.
