Offensive attack leads W&J to 7-0 win at Oberlin

AMHERST, Ohio -- The Presidents scored early and often en route to a 7-0 non-conference win at Oberlin.

With the win, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team improves to 2-0 on the season. The Yeowomen drop their season-opener to fall to 0-1.

Freshman Caroline Kallos started the scoring for W&J just 2:44 into the contest. With just under 12 minutes elapsed, sophomore Lauren Brown scored the first of her two goals in the game, stretching the lead to 2-0.

At the 19:12-mark, senior Miren Zubillaga registered the third goal for the Presidents from senior Victoria Forkus. Junior Natalie Paul then made it 4-0 at the 27:45-mark off an assist by Kallos. Sophomore Amanda Steffey closed the first-half scoring with 55 seconds to play in the period when she dribbled through the defense to score, sending W&J into the break leading, 5-0.

Through the first 35 minutes, the Presidents held a dominating 18-0 advantage on shots and attempted five penalty corners, compared to none for the hosts.

Brown scored on a long shot just 4:24 into the second half to put W&J ahead 6-0 and Steffey capped the scoring in the 66th minute with her second goal after she beat the keeper one-on-one.

For the game, Washington & Jefferson led 28-2 on shots and 9-3 on penalty corners. Steffey and Kallos each led with eight shots on the day, while Brown added five shots.

Freshman Karlie Baran earned the win in goal to improve to 2-0, playing the first half and not facing a shot. Junior Morgan Brozena played the second half between the pipes, stopping the only shot on goal she faced.

The Presidents return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 2 with an 8 p.m. non-conference road game at Bethany (W.Va.).
