W&J opens Empire 8 play with 4-1 win over Elmira

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team opened Empire 8 play with a 4-1 win over Elmira at Cameron Stadium.

With the win, the Presidents move to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. The Soaring Eagles drop to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the E8.

Caroline Kallos opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a goal off an assist by Gina Taglieri. Two minutes later, Allison Morrissey extended the lead off a deflected shot by Kallos, pushing the lead to 2-0, which it remained at halftime.

Lauren Brown scored off a deflected Taglieri shot less than five minutes into the second half to push the margin to 3-0. Elmira scored at the 42:02-mark of the game, and Morrissey capped the day for W&J, finishing after a save by Elmira's keeper to the lower right 90.

W&J held a 19-12 advantage on shots, thanks to a 14-4 lead in the first half. Amanda Steffey led the Presidents with seven shots and Kallos added five. W&J took 13 penalty corners on the day, compared to 10 for Elmira.

The Presidents return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 with a 7 p.m. match-up against Wooster at Cameron Stadium.
