LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team went 2-2 at the Bucknell Bison Invitational over the weekend, posting a 1-1 mark on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Presidents opened the invitational with a 13-7 loss to the host Bison on Saturday afternoon, before rallying for an 11-10 win against Mercyhurst on Saturday night. Sunday began with a 14-3 loss against Fordham and concluded with a 10-6 win over Salem International.
W&J held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter against Bucknell. The hosts rebounded by scoring five unanswered goals in the second quarter as part of a 9-0 run that lasted until
Kevin Dunigan scored mid-way through the third quarter, 10-3.
Carl Krause scored a pair of goals for the Presidents in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. Krause led the team with three goals and
Mike Magdic added a pair of scores.
Chris DeNunzio made five saves in the defeat.
Against Mercyhurst, the two teams were tied 2-2 after one period as Dunigan tied the game with 12 seconds left in the period. The Presidents work the lead to 5-2 thanks to goals by Krause,
Patrick Fredrick and
Nick Willison, and took a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Twice in the second half (7-4, 8-5) W&J held a three-goal lead, and once again led by one, 8-7, at halftime. With the score tied, 9-9, and under two minutes left in regulation, Fredrick gave the Presidents a 10-9 lead. After a score by the Lakers 38 seconds later,
Ben McGrath scored the game-winner with 48 ticks remaining.
Fredrick led the way with four goals in the win, with Dunigan registering three scores and Willison tallying two goals. DeNunzio made 11 saves in the victory.
Krause led with two goals against Fordham, with Dunigan posting the other. DeNunzio collected two saves.
W&J built a 4-1 lead through one period against Salem, eventually taking the lead as high as 6-1 mid-way through the second quarter en route to a 6-2 lead at the half.
Mitch Fountain and Willison led the way with two goals apiece and four Presidents collected one goal, including
Sam Taylor.
Mac Hennessy posted nine saves in goal and
Anthony Squeglia added four stops.
The Presidents host their home-opener at Henry Memorial Natatorium on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they host Monmouth and Salem International at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
