WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Despite a 10-shot advantage on the afternoon, the Presidents were unable to overcome a pair of first-half goals by Mount Union in a 3-1 loss.
The loss drops the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team to 3-5 on the season while the Mount Union improves to 5-3.
The Purple Raiders scored a pair of goals 8:12 apart in the first half to take a 2-0 lead through 45 minutes. Less than 15 minutes into the second half they added an insurance goal to go ahead 3-0.
In the 72nd minute,
Garrett French scored his first collegiate goal when he hit a ball over the outstretched arm of the keeper just under the crossbar, 3-1.
Justin Carter was stopped on a penalty kick late that would have brought the Presidents within a score.
W&J held a 26-16 edge on shots, including a dominating 17-6 margin in the second half.
Brian Hanna led all players with six shots with
James Calvert and
Jason Menni each adding five.
Jon Best suffered the loss, allowing two goals and making six saves in playing the first 45 minutes.
Ben Wilt played the second half and allowed one goal while recording two saves.
W&J travels to Muskingum on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. before opening Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Westminster.
