NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- In the final tune-up before the start of league play, the Presidents earned a 4-1 non-conference victory at Muskingum.
The win moves the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team to 4-5 on the season while the Muskies drop to 4-6. W&J opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 4 with a 1 p.m. contest at Westminster.
Brian Hanna started the scoring just 4:54 into the match when he shot from in front of the cage after following a header pass from
Dylan Small. The 1-0 score would hold through the first half despite 12 shots from the Presidents.
Muskingum's lone goal came 57 seconds after a red card forced them to play with a man down for the final 39:13. The score was by Austin Mills who buried a direct kick from 55 yards out, 1-1.
It only took W&J 1:29 to re-take the lead for good when
Justin Carter finished off a header from
Jason Menni at the 53:13 mark. Hanna added his second goal of the game one-on-one with the keeper after taking a pass from Carter.
Connor McKenzie capped the scoring by going far post from the top of the box following the Small's second assist of the night.
The Presidents boasted a 24-17 lead on shots as Hanna tied for the game lead with six shots. Menni and
James Calvert each added four shots.
Jon Best improved to 4-5 on the year with seven saves in 90 minutes.
