WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team picked up a pair of victories over Mercyhurst and Gannon to run its winning streak to five games.
The Presidents improve to 7-4 on the season after opening 2-4. During its current five-game winning streak, W&J has out-scored its opponents by 5.4 goals per game. The victories were both Southern Division, West Region match-ups and improves the Presidents to 3-0 in the Region.
After not beating Mercyhurst since 2005, the Presidents have now won two-straight against the Lakers after an 11-10 win on Sept. 13 at Bucknell and Saturday's 15-9 win.
The first quarter came to a close tied, 1-1, thanks to an opening goal from
Kevin Dunigan. The second quarter saw each team score two goals to conclude the first 16 minutes tied at 3-3.
W&J pulled away with six goals in the third quarter, three of which were by
Josh Emde, and put the Presidents ahead, 9-4.
Mike Magdic recorded a hat trick in the fourth quarter as W&J finished out the 15-9 win. Magdic's four goals were a game high.
W&J scored six goals in the first quarter against Gannon to open up a 6-3 lead after eight minutes.
Patrick Fredrick scored a pair of goals in the frame. Four Presidents scored a goal in the second period as W&J built a 10-6 lead at halftime.
Mitch Fountain helped ensure the victory with a hat trick in the fourth quarter as W&J won 19-11. Fredrick led all players with five goals. Fountain and
Nick Willison added a trio of scores while
Carl Krause, Magdic, Dunigan and
Ben McGrath each collected two goals.
Chris DeNunzio made 10 saves in the victory.
W&J will travel to the west coast next weekend, opening with an 8 p.m. eastern match at Caltech on Thursday before taking part in the two-day Gary Troyer Invitational.
