No. 2 Thomas More hits the glass in 83-53 win over W&J


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The No. 2 Thomas More women's basketball team collected 29 offensive rebounds and 59 total boards en route to an 83-53 win over Washington & Jefferson.

With the loss, the Presidents drop to 10-3 on the season with a 4-2 record in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Thomas More remains unbeaten at 13-0 and 6-0 in PAC games.

W&J led for the first eight minutes of the game, as Taylor Cortazzo opened the scoring with a three-pointer and Beka Bellhy hit a jumper in the paint to make it a 5-0 lead 1:19 into the game. Sydney Moss scored five of the next six points in the game for the Saints, but a triple from Danni Medovich answer a Moss three and extended the lead to 9-5.

TMC's Nikki Kiernan scored six of the next eight points in the game to tie the score, 11-11 with 11:45 to go.

The Saints built a 22-16 lead with 8:48 to play, but Erin Lavery scored five points on a traditional three-point play and then two additional free throws and Valerie Dunlap followed up with a free throw at 7:58 to tie the game, 22-22.

W&J earned its last lead on a Bellhy layup at 6:37, 24-23, but the Saints used a 14-5 run to close the half, including 8-1 in the final 2:10, to take a 37-29 lead into the break.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Thomas More built the lead to 27 points, 61-34, after out-scoring W&J 24-5 during the span en route to the 83-53 victory.

Bellhy and Cortazzo each finished with 10 points. Dunlap pulled in a team-best nine rebounds.

For the game, W&J shot just 29.8 percent (14-of-47), attempting 29 less shots than Thomas More (76), thanks to a 59-42 disadvantage in rebounds.

W&J hits the road for a pair of PAC games this coming week, opening with a 5:30 p.m. tip at conference co-leader Saint Vincent in Latrobe.
