BETHANY, W.Va. -- Senior
Valerie Dunlap eclipsed 1,000-career points as the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team downed Bethany, 90-72.
Dunlap entered the game needing 12 points and reached the milestone 1:26 into the second half after scoring 11 points in the first half.
The 6-3 center finished with 19 points and a team-best 10 rebounds for her 31st career double-double in the Presidents' Athletic Conference victory that improved W&J to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the PAC.
Taylor Cortazzo led five W&J players in double figures with a game- and career-best 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including five-of-six from beyond-the-arc.
Alexa DelGreco (13 points),
Amirah Moore (12 points) and
Erin Lavery (11 points) all topped double digits for the Presidents. Lavery added six rebounds and three steals, while Moore posted four boards and four steals.
W&J led by 19 points, 37-18, with 5:10 left in the first half, but a 20-5 run by the hosts made it 42-38 with just over one minute to play in the opening stanza. A layup by
Tori Bishop and a three at the buzzer by Cortazzo sent the Presidents to a 47-38 lead at halftime.
Bethany (7-8, 3-5) scored 14 of the first 18 points of the second half to take a one-point lead on a pair of free throws at 15:37, 52-51. A 5-0 run by W&J on a three-point play by Dunlap and a pair of free throws by
Danni Medovich gave the visitors a 56-52 lead.
The Presidents built their lead throughout the remainder of the game, with the 18-point final marking the largest margin of the half.
W&J will be home for a pair of PAC contests, beginning with a 6 p.m. tip against Westminster on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
