Jackets stave off Presidents, 64-57

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Tyler Haas recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as Waynesburg topped Washington & Jefferson in league play, 64-57.

The Presidents (1-11, 0-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference) trailed by one point, 27-26, at halftime after scoring the final seven points of the first period.

W&J scored the first seven points of the second half to open up a six-point lead, 33-27, thanks to a triple by Adam Robison and buckets by Mike Resnik and Haas in the first 1:06.

Another three-pointer by Robison and a layup from Mitch Locher and the lead was nine points, 38-29, with 17:13 on the clock.

Three times in a three-plus minute span, W&J led by a game-high 11 points, including a pair of fast break layups by Haas, the second one of which ultimately gave the hosts a 49-38 lead with 12:41 to play.

Waynesburg (6-6, 2-1) then scored seven of the next eight points to cut the deficit to five, 50-45, but a triple from Doug Johnson and a jumper by Haas pushed the advantage back out to 10 points, 55-45, with 5:25 remaining. The Haas jumper proved to be the final field goal the Presidents would make in the contest as the Yellow Jackets closed the game on a 19-2 run.

Resnik finished with a game-best 19 points, his seventh-straight game in double figures and 11th time in 12 games. He also contributed six rebounds. Haas had four assists to go along wtih his double-double and Robison eight points, three boards and three helpers.

W&J is at Geneva on Wednesday, Jan. 7 for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
