Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Waynesburg uses three-ball to edge W&J, 79-74

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- More than half of Waynesburg's made field goals (29) were three-pointers (15) as the Yellow Jackets topped W&J, 79-74, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The loss drops the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team to 9-2 on the season and 3-1 in the PAC. Waynesburg improves to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Leading, 13-11, 4:40 into game, Danni Medovich knocked down a jumper to jump start a 14-0 run for the Presidents that spanned almost five minutes. Beka Bellhy (six) and Medovich (five) combined for 11 points during spurt and W&J held a 27-11 advantage with 11:04 to go in the first half.

W&J twice worked the lead to a game-high 20 points down the stretch in the first half. A triple by Alexa DelGreco made it 39-19 with 6:04 on the clock and then Bellhy answered a Waynesburg jumper with a layup to make it 41-21. Eventually the Presidents took a 48-35 lead into intermission.

In the first half, the Washington & Jefferson made 57.6 percent (19-of-33) of its shots, including five-of-seven (71.4 percent) from three-point range. Medovich (14) and Bellhy (13) combined for 27 points in the opening 20 minutes.

A 10-2 run by the Yellow Jackets to open the second half took the score to 50-45 at 16:37, but following a three-pointer by Medovich at 13:38, which made it a 58-49 game, Waynesburg knocked down five-straight three-point attempts to take a four-point lead, 64-60, at 9:03. The larger span involved a 25-5 rush by Waynesburg that took it from down nine to leading by 11.

Taylor Cortazzo alleviated the pressure and helped to commence an 11-1 run with a three-pointer at 5:11. After a Jackets' free throw on the next trip, W&J scored the eight-consecutive points, including a three-pointer by Erin Lavery to make it 75-72 with 3:42 to go and a jumper in the paint by Bellhy which brought W&J within one with 2:07 to play.

The Presidents did not record a point, however, following Bellhy's last bucket and a three-pointer from WU at 1:41 and a free throw with 16 seconds to play clinched the contest for the guests.

W&J made only 25.0 percent (8-of-32) of its shots in the second half to finish 41.5 percent (27-of-65) for the game.

Bellhy recorded her first double-double of the season with game highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Five Presidents finished in double figures as Medovich matched her season-high with 18 points, including five triples. Amirah Moore added 11 points and five boards, while Cortazzo and Valerie Dunlap each posted 10 points. Dunlap added seven boards and six blocks.

The Presidents travel to Beaver Falls, Pa., on Wednesday, Jan. 7 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Geneva.
