How it Happened: Washington & Jefferson (7-3) earned its sixth win in the last seven matches with an 11-7 victory at Caltech (4-5) to open the Presidents' annual West Coast trip to Southern California. The Presidents lead by just a 6-5 margin through three periods, but scored five of the first six goals of the fourth quarter to emerge triumphant. W&J, ranked 10th in Division III in the most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association poll, improves to 6-0 all-time against the Beavers
Top Performers:
Nicholas Willison and
Patrick Fredrick each tallied three goals, with Willison finding the back of the net once in each of the final three quarters and Fredrick adding one in the first, third and fourth stanzas. Willison's goal at 5:36 of the third quarter broke a 4-4 tie and put the Presidents ahead for good.
The Rest: W&J got one goal apiece from
Collin Higgins,
Joshua Emde,
Troy Smith,
Benjamin McGrath and
Tyler Willison, while six saves were made by
Mac Hennessy in goal.
What's Next: The California swing continues for the Presidents as they will play four games in the next two days as part of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament hosted by Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, Calif. W&J will begin the Troyer Tournament with a match-up against Division III No. 6 Chapman at 4:40 p.m. Pacific and 7:40 Eastern on Friday, Oct. 2.
