ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team snapped a five-game losing skid with a 4-0 shutout victory at Elmira in Empire 8 action.
The win improves W&J to 5-7 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The Soaring Eagles fall to 4-8 overall and 1-4 within the league.
Allison Morrissey had a hand in all four Presidents' scores, tallying a goal and three assists. Just 3:15 into the game, she found
Laura O'Malley off a penalty corner to give W&J a 1-0 lead. At the 21:59-mark, Morrissey fed a pass to
Amanda Steffey that led to Steffey's team-leading fifth goal of the season and made it a 2-0 advantage, which stuck at halftime.
W&J added two insurance goals 1:36 apart in the final three minutes of the game as Morrissey scored her second goal of the season on a deflection past the keeper following a shot from
Alana Boyd at 67:04. O'Malley's second goal of the game capped the afternoon as she scored a five-hole goal off of another penalty corner helper by Morrissey.
The Presidents boasted a 17-3 advantage in shots thanks to a 12-1 lead in the first half. Steffey led all players with five shots and O'Malley added four, while
Caroline Kallos notched three.
Morgan Brozena picked up her third shutout of the season in cage, making one save in the process.
W&J continues Empire 8 plays on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it hosts Hartwick at 12 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.
