WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team evened its Empire 8 record at 3-3 with a 4-0 shutout of Hartwick at Cameron Stadium.
Claire Shaak's first career goal proved to be the game winner 10:26 into play when she finished high off of a cross through the circle from
Kelly Knisel.
Amanda Steffey took over the offense from there, completing her third career hat trick and moving into a tie for fifth place on the W&J career scoring list in the process at 29 goals. Her first score came in the 27th minute off a pass from Shaak and put W&J in the lead 2-0, which it maintained through halftime.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Steffey scored her second of the game and seventh of the year thanks to Knisel's second assist of the game.
As the game neared its end Steffey was able to finish off the hat trick with 22 seconds left thanks to an assist from
Rachel Buyan, giving W&J the 4-0 E8 victory.
For the day, the Presidents held a 14-1 advantage on shots and 8-0 in shots on goal. Steffey recorded four shots, while
Lauren Brown added three and Knisel and
Laura O'Malley both posted two.
Morgan Brozena earned her fourth shutout of the season in goal in improving to 6-7 this year in cage, without facing a shot on goal.
W&J returns to the field with its final two regular season road games next week, the first being a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game at Bethany on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
