Toohey sets single-season goals mark; W&J blanks Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- In just the 12th match of the season, Washington & Jefferson's Jordan Toohey broke the single-season goals record with a four-goal performance as part of W&J's 8-0 shutout against Waynesburg.

Entering the night ranked third in the nation in goals per game (1.64) and points per game (3.55), Toohey broke the previous goals record of 20, set by Holly Shipley in 2013, with her second four-goal showing of the year. The sophomore opened the scoring just 1:31 into the match with her 19th goal of the season, and tied the record -- putting W&J ahead, 2-0 -- 3:33 later, off an assist by Hayley Skovira. Both of the first two scores went just inside the upper right corner of the cage in nearly identical fashion.

The first four goals of the evening saw Toohey play a role in them. She assisted on Tatiana Ruzzini's fifth of the year, and 21st of her career, which put the Presidents ahead 3-0 at the 6:20-mark. In the 17th minute, Toohey moved to the top of the single-season list with her 21st following a cross from Josie Madden, giving her four hat tricks this year and tying her with Ruzzini and Samantha Hudson for eighth on the W&J career scoring list.

The final goal of the first half came off the foot of Molly Peddicord, who finished after a cross through the box by Lauren Virgin, and sent the Presidents into halftime leading, 5-0.

Under 10 minutes into the second period, Toohey converted off a cross from Madden for her 22nd of the season, moving into sole possession of eighth place on the career list, one behind Marcy Selestrow, who scored 23 in her career, and putting W&J ahead, 6-0.

The 65th minute brought the seventh goal for W&J on Samantha Fields' second of the season, and Skovira capped the evening with a direct-kick goal, her sixth this year, in the 85th minute.

Shots for the evening were skewed to the home team, as the Presidents took 23 to Waynesburg's one. Toohey took six, Madden registered five and Ashton Grimm added four of her own.

Allison Rinehimer made one save and improved to 7-1-1 on the year with her fifth shutout and eighth overall for Washington & Jefferson.

W&J improves to 10-1-1 on the season and 4-0-0 in the PAC, while Waynesburg falls to 5-6-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league games.

The Presidents travel to Bethany, W.Va. for a 1 p.m. PAC match against the Bison on Saturday, Oct. 17.
