WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents moved closer to clinching a return berth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Thiel at the Henry Gym.
The win moves Washington & Jefferson to 13-9 overall and 8-6 in the PAC, good for a fourth-place tie with Grove City.
W&J held on for a close 26-24 win in the first game before holding Thiel to the lowest point total allowed this season by the Presidents in a 25-6 second-set win. The match was clinched with a 25-21 win, giving W&J three sweeps in its last four matches.
In the second set, W&J led 4-3 early and then went on an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 15-3. After the two teams traded points, the Presidents scored five straight to take a 21-5 lead before four consecutive points closed out the 25-6 win.
Sarah Dindak and
Taylor Freeman each posted a game-high 10 kills, with
Nicole Bishwaty adding nine, to go along with her team-best 26 assists and two service aces.
Emily Toy contributed 13 assists and seven digs, plus two of W&J's five aces.
Defensively,
Allison Means, who entered play ranked 13th in all of NCAA Division III with 5.82 digs per set, notched a team-high 26 digs, her 12th straight match in double figures. Dindak completed the double-double with 10 digs.
Abigail Eich led all players with five blocks (three solo), while
Madison Lydic tallied four (two solo) and Freeman contributed two.
W&J hosts third-place Bethany on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
