PITTSFORD, N.Y. --
Claire Shaak scored with 15 seconds left in regulation as the Presidents pulled off a 2-1 upset of Empire 8 co-leader St. John Fisher on the road.
With the win, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team improves to 8-7 on the season with a 4-3 mark in the E8 and keeps its playoff hopes alive. SJF drops to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in league games.
St. John Fisher's Elizabeth Cusack tied the game later, at 65:35, at 1-1 after W&J had led for most of the contest. After the Cardinals goal, W&J controlled possession the rest of the way, accounting for all of the offensive statistics down the stretch. The Presidents posted four penalty corners and three shots in the final 2:12, with
Laura O'Malley being stopped twice before Shaak was able to score on the rebound and give the guests the 2-1 victory.
O'Malley played a role in the first goal of the game, when
Kelly Knisel scored on a deflection of an O'Malley shot 13:03 into play, 1-0.
Behind 10 second-half shots, the home team held a 14-8 advantage, but the Presidents made the most of their opportunities, placing seven of eight shots on goal, while Fisher only put 5-of-14 on target. O'Malley led the team with three shots, while Knisel added two.
Morgan Brozena made four saves on the day, moving her to 212 on her career and within seven of second place on the W&J career list, currently occupied by Shelby Colyer at 219. She improves to 8-7 on the year.
W&J will have a quick turnaround, hosting Ohio Wesleyan in nonconference action on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Cameron Stadium at 1 p.m.
