Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey wins fifth straight, blanks OWU 4-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team ran its winning streak to five games with a 4-0 shutout of Ohio Wesleyan at Cameron Stadium.

The game culminated a fundraising campaign by the Presidents for the Play4TheCure initiative in which W&J raised approximately $4,000 towards cancer research.

Lauren Brown opened the scoring 29:32 into play for her fourth of the season after an assist from Amanda Steffey.

It would hold up as the only goal of the first half as W&J held a 1-0 lead through 35 minutes.

Steffey extended the lead to 2-0 just 4:02 into the second half with her 10th of the season and seventh in the last six games after finishing a pass from Caroline Kallos.

Kallos got in on the scoring act herself, netting her second of the season, after dribbling past her defender from the top of the circle to push the advantage to 3-0.

The final goal of the game came off the stick of Rachel Buyan, but was assisted by Steffey. The goal came following a penalty corner and Steffey, at the top of the circle, dished to Buyan who was around 12 yards out when she ripped in her fifth of the season.

In total, the Presidents (9-7) held the Battling Bishops (8-9) to just two shots, both in the first half, and none over the last 42:40. W&J totaled 20 shots on the day, led by Steffey's six and Kallos' five. Buyan and Laura O'Malley each took three shots.

The shutout, the sixth of the season and fourth in the last five games for the Presidents, extended W&J's streak at home with an opponent goal to 148:03. Morgan Brozena made two saves to pick up her ninth win of the season in playing 57:01 before giving way to Karlie Baran who played the final 12:59 and did not face a shot.

W&J hosts Oberlin in nonconference action on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
