Presidents capture 3-2 win against Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents built a 2-0 lead through 13 minutes, but the Wolverines battled back to tie the match before Jordan Toohey scored the game winner in the 66th minute to give W&J a 3-2 win over Grove City.

The win allows Washington & Jefferson's women's soccer team to keep pace atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings with Thomas More and Westminster at 2-0, while improving to 8-1-1 overall. Grove City, the three-time defending league runner-up, drops to 6-5-1 on the year and 1-1 in conference matches.

Toohey opened the scoring just 4:06 into play when she headed in her 16th goal of the season after Hayley Skovira directed a corner kick from Mariah Lockard in front of the cage. Ashton Grimm pushed the lead to 2-0 8:37 later when she scored off a rebound following a save by Grove City's Nicole Lapia on a Toohey shot. It was the third of the season for the sophomore.

The Wolverines were able to cut the margin in half, 2-1, at the 27:00-mark when Lindsay Hutton scored on a header off of Jordyn White's corner kick. Just over 10 minutes into the second period, Megan Van Kirk knotted the match at 2-2 on another header for the guests.

Toohey put the Presidents ahead for good with her PAC-leading 17th goal of the season, already reaching the top five single-season scoring totals in program history in just the 10th match of the year. Grimm collected the assist after her through ball led to a Toohey breakaway that she was able to chip past Lapia at 66:59.

For Toohey, her 17 goals this season are the fourth-highest total in program history, passing Holly Shipley (2012) and teammate Tatiana Ruzzini (2014) who each scored 16. Shipley is first atop the single-season record book with 20 in 2013, while Jen Pergola (2003) and Nicole Bosley (1997) each scored 19 in a season.

For the evening, W&J held a 16-9 advantage on shots, thanks to a 12-4 edge in the second half. Toohey led all players with five, while Ruzzini and Grimm each added four.

Allison Rinehimer saw her, and the team's, scoreless streak come to an end, but earned her fifth win of the season with four saves in cage.

W&J will travel to Geneva on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a 4:30 p.m. fray against the Golden Tornadoes in Beaver Falls, Pa.
