W&J recovers from sluggish start for 81-50 victory at Thiel

By Danielle Kochka, Sports Information Assistant

The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a commanding 81-50 victory over the Thiel Tomcats.

Thiel led the Presidents 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, with Amirah Moore keeping the Presidents in the game with eight first-quarter points. W&J jumped ahead in the second quarter, outscoring the Tomcats 24-10. Seniors Beka Bellhy and Ashley Mikelonis tallied seven points each to give the Presidents a comfortable 42-29 lead going into halftime.

The second half started the way the first half ended, with the Presidents outscoring the Tomcats 25-12, increasing their lead to 67-41. Two Presidents reached personal milestones during this quarter. A pair of free throws gave Bellhy 11 points on the day, moving her into the top 10 on the W&J Women's Basketball all-time scoring list. Also, Mikelonis recorded her 15th point, giving her a new career-high in points (previous was 14 vs. La Roche on Nov. 24, 2012).

Mikelonis finished the game shooting 5-9 from the field, as well as 3-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Moore finished with 12 points, and sophomores Taley Dunaway and Rachel Bellhy brought down a team-high five rebounds each.

The Presidents move to 7-1 on the season, as well as 3-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. W&J's next game will be on December 20th, when they travel to La Roche to take on the Redhawks in a 2 p.m. match-up. The two teams played once already this season, with the Presidents earning a 90-82 win at the Henry Memorial Center.
