Hot-shooting, strong defense send W&J to 61-50 win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Behind four players in double figures and a strong overall defensive effort, the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team earned a 61-50 win at Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Trailing 18-17 after a Westminster layup with 5:33 left in the first half, the Presidents utilized an 11-0 run to take a 28-18 lead.

Tyler Haas scored on a jumper at the 4:43 mark to put W&J ahead, 19-18, and then baskets by Mitch Locher and Jake Swan extended the lead to five, 23-18. Swan knocked down a triple down with 2:39 remaining to extend the margin to eight before a layup from Lindquist capped the run at 1:56.

A bucket by the Titans closed the half with W&J leading 28-20.

The Presidents maintained the lead throughout the second half, with Westminster closing within six at the 7:34-mark. That sparked a 7-0 run by W&J, with Haas accounting for three points during the spurt to stretch the game margin to 54-41.

A three-pointer by Doug Johnson with 20 seconds left put W&J ahead by a game-high 14 points, 61-47, before a three by Westminster cut the final spread to 11, 61-50.

Locher scored a team-high 16 points and dished out four assists. Haas scored 12 points and led all players with five assists. Lindquist scored 10 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, blocked five shots and added three assists. Johnson tabbed 10 points to round out the four scorers in double figures.

The Presidents close out the 2014-15 regular season with a 3 p.m. Senior Day tip-off against Bethany on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Henry Center.
