NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents survived a scare in a 63-60 win at Westminster in the penultimate Presidents' Athletic Conference contest of the year.
The win moves Washington & Jefferson to 18-6 overall and 12-5 in PAC women's basketball games. The Titans slide to 5-19 on the year and 4-13 in the league.
Beka Bellhy scored W&J's first eight points of the game as the score was tied, 8-8, early on. A pair of free throws by
Taylor Cortazzo at the 11:25 mark gave W&J a three-point advantage before a triple by Paige Quinn for Westminster knotted the game, 20-20.
From that point, the Presidents embarked on a 10-0 run that spanned five minutes, as Bellhy accounted for six points and Cortazzo and
Amirah Moore each added buckets. W&J led 30-20 with 5:22 to play in the opening half following Bellhy's jumper.
Westminster tied the game with its own 10-0 run that lasted three minutes before
Rachel Bellhy halted the spurt and put W&J ahead, 32-30. The final points of the opening stanza were scored by the Titans and the teams entered halftime tied at 32-32.
The Presidents led the majority of the second half, including a five-point margin (60-55) with 1:28 to play following a free throw by
Valerie Dunlap. Westminster recorded a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left to make it a one-possession game, but Moore scored on a layup seven ticks later to stretch the lead back to five, 62-57.
Rachel Durbin knocked down a three-pointer at the :30-mark, making it a 62-60 game. Following a Titans' timeout, the hosts secured a steal and called another time out to set up their offense. A missed triple was rebounded by the offense, but the Titans turned the ball over which led to a free throw with four seconds remaining by
Alexa DelGreco that made it 63-60 and Westminster failed to convert a last-second heave.
After a 14-point showing in the first half,
Beka Bellhy led all players with 18 points in the game. Dunlap contributed her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Cortazzo finished with 11 points and team bests with four assists and four steals.
The Presidents wrap up the 2014-15 regular season with a 1 p.m. Senior Day tip-off against Bethany on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Henry Center.
