PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Presidents rallied from a 7-4 deficit to close the game with four-straight goals in an 8-7 non-conference win at La Roche.
Trailing, 7-4, in the third quarter,
Zachary Fredericks scored his first goal of the game off a feed from
Ryan Quan to make it 7-5.
Kyle MacKenzie notched an unassisted marker with 43 seconds left in the third period to bring W&J within one, 7-6, heading to the final 15 minutes.
Fredericks scored the last two goals of the contest three minutes apart when he found the back of the net to tie the game at 6:40 and then scored the eventual game-winner at 3:40. Both were unassisted.
The Presidents led early in the contest, building a 3-0 margin in the opening stages of the first quarter, which included a pair of goals by
Kyle Heinig. The Redhawks answered with a pair of man-up scores to bring the game within one, but Heinig completed the hat trick with 45 seconds to go in the frame to push the W&J lead to 4-2.
In the second and third quarters, the hosts scored five consecutive goals to take a 7-4 lead before Fredericks jump started the 4-0 run that W&J closed the game on.
With the win, the Presidents move to 2-0 to open the year for the second time in as many seasons. La Roche drops to 0-1 after their season-opener.
The hosts led in shots the final three quarters and held an overall 33-26 advantage. Heinig topped the Presidents with seven shots while Fredericks and
Tim Angell each added five shots.
Fredericks posted a game-high five points, adding two assists on top of his hat trick. He also tied for the game-high in caused turnovers with teammate
Chase Bennett. Bennett led the way with seven ground balls, while Quan and Heinig each corralled six.
Jacob Succop improved to 2-0 in going the distance and making 12 saves, including four in the fourth quarter.
W&J travels to Bethany (W.Va.) on Wednesday, March 4 for a 5 p.m. game against the Bison.
