W&J and Geneva battle to the end in 69-64 GT's win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A close contest between two Presidents' Athletic Conference foes ended with Geneva defeating W&J, 69-64, at the Henry Center.

In a game that saw eight ties and seven lead changes, the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team led for 20:48.

A layup by Eric Holmes 4:46 into the game capped a 9-2 run for W&J to start. After Geneva made it a one-point game, a 6-0 run by the Presidents stretched the lead back to seven points, 21-14, with 7:59 remaining in the first half.

The remainder of the period saw three ties, including the final one at the 1:40-mark, 26-26. Tyler Haas made a pair of free throws to force the tie and then give the Presidents a one-point lead, but Jordan Lawrence answer for Geneva with a three-pointer and then a layup to give the guests a four-point lead, 31-27. A Haas free throw and pair of bonus shots by Mike Resnik sent the Presidents into the locker room down one, 31-30.

In the second half, W&J led by four three times, its largest lead of the frame, but after a trey by Jimmy Leichliter tied the game for Geneva, 54-54, with 8:49 to go, the Golden Tornadoes did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Four Presidents reached double figures, led by Mitch Locher's 16 points, matching his season-high for the third time, and nine rebounds. Brian Lindquist scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds and four blocks, the most by a W&J player this season. Doug Johnson and Resnik each scored 10 points, with Resnik adding six assists.

Haas had a strong, well-rounded game with eight points, eight assists and five rebounds. The eight helpers were one shy of his career best set on Dec. 19, 2013 against Juniata.

W&J travels to Waynesburg on Saturday, Feb. 7 for a 3:30 p.m. PAC tip-off against the Yellow Jackets.
