W&J drops pair of season-opening contests in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson softball team opened the 2015 campaign with a pair of losses against New England schools to start the trip to Florida.

The Presidents open the season 0-2, after dropping a 3-0 decision against the United States Coast Guard Academy at the start of the day and suffering a 3-2 setback in extra innings against Bates.

Morgan Figura led W&J in the opener with a 2-for-3 showing with a pair of doubles.

Jen Bahm gave the Presidents an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap with a solo homer. Bates tied the game in the bottom of the second and the two teams finished regulation tied, 1-1.

Using the international tiebreaker in the eighth inning, Meghan Staab put the Presidents ahead in the top of the frame with a sacrifice fly to score Emily Watson after she began the inning on second base and was bunted to third by Bahm.

Bates answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning, however, for the 3-2 victory.

Sadie Marak led W&J with two hits and a 2-for-3 showing with a walk.

W&J plays Transylvania and the University of New England tomorrow, Sunday, March 15 at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
