WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team swept Oswego State by 8-5 and 8-6 scores in a doubleheader to begin play in the spring break trip to Florida.
Jared Baird earned the win in game one to improve to 1-0 and
Riley Groves picked up the victory in the second game to move to 2-0 for the 3-1 Presidents.
Frank Fortunato gave W&J a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, drilling a 2-2 pitch to left field for his first collegiate homer, a three-run shot. He drove in
Gannon Rooney, who had led off the game with a double, and
Nick Vento who walked.
In the second inning,
Anthony Paladino and
Nelson McKown both singled to lead off and
Cory Bauer brought in Paladino with an RBI ground out, 4-0.
An Oswego State run in the bottom of the third was answered in the top of the fourth by McKown's first career home run as he sent a solo shot over the left field fence. W&J added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth for an 8-1 lead. McKown walked and then pinch-runner
Ryan Sciullo stole second. A walk to Bauer put two on which allowed Rooney to drive in Sciullo on a single through the right side. Bauer and Rooney executed a double steal and then
Michael Ruffing took a base on balls which set the plate for a two-out, two-run single through the left side by
Kyle Smith.
Oswego scored four in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to overcome the seven-run lead W&J had built.
Baird went the distance in the opener, scattering nine hits and five earned runs while striking out seven and walking just one.
McKown and Rooney each finished with two hits. Fortunato (three) and Smith (two) both had multi-RBI showings.
In the nightcap, W&J jumped out to an 8-0 lead before holding on for the 8-6 victory.
Rooney was hit by a pitch to lead off and Ruffing doubled to left to plate Rooney. A Vento single put runners on the corners, which allowed Smith to bring home Ruffing with a sacrifice fly and 2-0 lead through one inning.
In the bottom of the third, Vento collected a one-out double and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a
Nick Morton single up the middle. After stealing second, Morton scored on a single to right by Bauer who later scored on a double to center by
Joe Palumbo.
Rooney, Vento and Morton posted RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth to cap the scoring for the Presidents.
Oswego used extra-base hits to mount a rally, but
Tim Mulvey closed out the game in relief of Groves as the Presidents held on for the 8-5 triumph.
Vento and Morton each tied for the game high with three hits, including a pair of RBI for Morton. Rooney and Ruffing recorded two hits apiece, with Rooney scoring two runs.
Groves worked 6.0-plus in earning his second win of the season. He allowed seven hits and five earned runs, plus struck out five and walked two. Mulvey surrendered two hits and a run in his seventh-inning appearance.
W&J plays Wisconsin-La Crosse at 11:30 a.m. in Auburndale, Fla. on Monday, March 16.
