WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A bases-loaded, pinch-hit RBI by
Joe Palumbo sent the Presidents to a 6-5 walk-off win over Mount Union in non-conference action.
The win improves Washington & Jefferson's baseball team to 8-3 on the season, while dropping the Purple Raiders to 8-6.
The two teams headed to the bottom of the ninth knotted at 5-5.
Nick Vento led off the bottom of the frame with a single to center on a 1-2 pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Smith before going to third on a wild pitch. Mount Union intentionally walked
Frank Fortunato and
Ryan Sciullo to load the bases and cause a force play at every bases. That was when Palumbo delivered his game-winning fielder's choice, hitting a 1-1 pitch toward second base, that the UMU second baseman was able to make a diving stop on before being late on the throw.
The first five-and-a-half innings were scoreless before the Presidents put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived as Mount Union answered back with four runs in the top of the seventh.
In the eighth, Colt Turley drilled a homer to left field during the top half to give the guests a 5-4 lead. An RBI double by
Gannon Rooney in the bottom of the inning tied the game and nearly gave the Presidents the lead, but
Nelson McKown was thrown out at home on a relay throw from the third baseman.
Michael Ruffing led all players with four hits, matching his career high set on April 21, 2013 against Saint Vincent. He finished 4-for-5 with a double. Vento posted his sixth-straight multi-hit game in going 2-for-4. Sciullo and
Jake Gordon also went 2-for-4 with RBI, as Sciullo added an RBI triple in the four-run sixth.
Tim Mulvey earned the win in relief, yielding two hits in the top of the ninth. Both teams used four pitchers in the game, with
Nick Kolat starting for the Presidents and working the first 6.0 frames and surrendering four hits and two runs.
Nick Comport and
Alex Carr each allowed an earned run in 1.0 inning of relief.
W&J returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action with a single, nine-inning game against Bethany at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.
