NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents opened up league action with a split at Westminster, earning a 8-0, five-inning win in the first game before suffering a 3-2 extra-inning loss.
With the split, Washington & Jefferson softball opens Presidents' Athletic Conference action at 1-1 and moves to 8-6 overall. Westminster is now 11-5 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.
Krista McCartney picked up the win in game one, striking out three in 5.0 innings and scattering six hits and five walks.
W&J attacked early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning with RBI going to
Sadie Marak (single),
Morgan Figura (ground out), Morgan Staab (single) and
Chalese Wilson (double).
The Presidents added single runs in the second and fourth, with
Jamie Smith sending her first career homer over the left field fence in the fourth. Staab doubled in a run and Wilson singled home another for a pair of W&J runs in the fifth, forcing the run-rule victory.
Marak, Staab and Wilson each finished 2-for-3 in the game, as Staab and Wilson each drove in two runs and Marak,
Emily Watson and
Jen Bahm all scored twice.
Abby Cunningham opened the scoring in the second game during the top of the third when Marak reached on an error. Marak added an RBI double to center in the fifth to stretch the lead to 2-0.
The Titans answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game again, then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and added the game-winner in the eighth.
Bahm was 2-for-4 to lead the Presidents in the nightcap.
Emily Watson suffered the loss, despite striking out eight in 7.0-plus innings.
W&J travels to Beaver Falls, Pa., on Tuesday, March 31 for a 3:30 p.m. PAC doubleheader against Geneva.
