Beka Bellhy reaches 1,000 points in ECAC rout of Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Junior forward Beka Bellhy became the 15th Washington & Jefferson women's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points in an 83-61 rout of Waynesburg in the ECAC Division III South Quarterfinals.

With the win, the Presidents avenge a pair of regular season Presidents' Athletic Conference losses to their Interstate 79 rivals and advance to 21-7 on the season, tying for the sixth-highest win total in program history. Waynesburg concludes its season at 15-12.

W&J will now travel to Reading, Pa., and top-seeded Albright for the ECAC Semifinals and a match-up against second-seeded Lebanon Valley on Saturday, March 7 at 4 p.m. The Dutchmen, who were a 71-52 winner over No. 7 Delaware Valley, trailed by four at halftime, 35-31, on Wednesday night, but out-scored DVC by a 40-17 count in the second half to advance. Albright hosts No. 4 Moravian, who topped No. 6 Marywood, 64-59, in the first semifinal on Saturday at 2 p.m. The two winners on Saturday play Sunday at 2 p.m. for the ECAC title.

Bellhy entered the contest needing just six points to reach the 1,000-point plateau and accomplished the milestone in 4:49. She entered into the W&J record books with a layup at the 15:11 mark of the first half to record exactly 1,000 points. She would go on to score 15 more to finish with 21 points in just 22 minutes, her eighth game over 20 points this season. She also added nine rebounds and three steals.

Valerie Dunlap recorded game highs of 22 points and 13 boards for her 12th double-double of the season. She also matched her season high with seven blocks, one shy of her career benchmark.

With her 22 points, Dunlap passes Maggie Gibson (2006-10) for ninth on the W&J all-time scoring list at 1,175 career points, 14 behind Kennan Killeen (2006-10) for eighth place. Dunlap also passed Heather Dawkins (1990-94) for second place on the W&J career rebounds list with 943 boards. In five career ECAC Tournament games, the 6-3 senior is averaging 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game with four double-doubles.

The game featured 47 fouls (28 on Waynesburg, 19 on W&J) and 72 free-throw attempts (W&J finished 37-of-49). W&J also held a dominating 58-35 lead in rebounding, with 12 players pulling down multiple boards.

Danni Medovich was also in double figures with 10 points, with Taylor Cortazzo and Rachel Bellhy each scoring eight. Alexa DelGreco had a balanced line with six points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Defensively, the Presidents held the Yellow Jackets to just 25.0 percent (18-of-72) from the field and 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from beyond-the-arc. During the regular season, Waynesburg shot 40.0 percent (58-of-145) from the floor and 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from three-point range.

Wednesday was the first game all season W&J was held without a three-pointer (0-for-5) for the first time since Dec. 19, 2013 at Allegheny, which ended a streak of 49-consecutive games with a triple.
