Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

W&J improves to 4-0 for first time in program history with 11-10 win

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 for the first time in program history with an 11-10 victory at Saint Vincent.

The win marked just the second time in 10 tries the Presidents were able to top the Bearcats, with the other coming in the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference title game, a 10-8 W&J triumph.

W&J never trailed Saint Vincent (1-2), thanks to goals by Kyle Heinig and Tim Angell in the first 5:13. A tally from SVC closed the first quarter with a 2-1 Presidents' advantage.

The Bearcats needed just 33 seconds to get on the board and tie the game in the second quarter, but Angell responded with his second goal of the game 23 seconds later to put the red and black back in the lead for good. Goals by Heinig and Zachary Fredericks pushed the lead to 5-2, before an SVC answer, but the Presidents closed the half with three goals (in which Bryan Whipkey played a role in all three) to head to the break with a game-best lead of 8-3.

In the second half, Saint Vincent held a 7-3 overall scoring edge. With SVC rallying and within 10-8, Heinig fired in a man-down goal at 7:06 of the fourth quarter to make it 11-8 and give W&J a three-goal cushion it would need to hang on for the 11-10 victory.

For the game, the hosts led in shots, 33-24, and secured 39 ground balls to W&J's 29. W&J won 10 of the 25 face-offs and converted on 14-of-26 clear attempts.

Heinig finished with a game-high five points with four goals, while Angell recorded a hat trick and Whipkey added three points (goal and two assists). John Bursch also registered multiple points with a goal and a helper. Angell (eight) and Heinig (six) combined for 14 of W&J's 24 shots.

Sean Rock paced the defense with six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Ryan Quan had four GB's and Fredericks and Chase Bennett each corralled three.

Jacob Succop was tremendous between the pipes, making a career-best 21 saves and holding a .677 save percentage. He improved to 4-0 with the victory and holds a 7.50 goals against average and .655 save percentage over 147 shots this season.

W&J is back in action on Monday, March 9 with a 6 p.m. match at Baldwin Wallace. The contest was originally scheduled for Feb. 28, but was postponed due to weather.
