WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Alex Dikos and
Diana Harvey each recorded five goals to lead the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 12-6 win over Franklin (Ind.).
It was a day of firsts for the Presidents at Alexandre Stadium, as the contest marked the first-ever Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) match for W&J, the first league game in program history, the first win in the head-coaching career of
Alison Valerio and the first win for the program since April 24, 2013. It was also the first career victory for goalkeeper
Kelsey Roetenberg, who made six saves in net to earn the win.
Paige Clark put the Grizzlies on the board first with a goal at 24:16 of the first half. Dikos answered just 14 seconds later off of the first collegiate point by
Caroline Kallos, who recorded the assist.
Kallos scored her own goal (and first of her career) at 17:33 to put W&J ahead, 2-1, and then
Ashley Bulger, Harvey twice and Dikos added tallies to increase the lead to 6-1. Both of Harvey's scores during the stretch were free-position shots.
Harvey added an unassisted goal with 4:47 remaining in the half after a Franklin goal to send W&J to a 7-2 halftime lead.
The Grizzlies scored four of the first six goals of the second half, but Dikos found the back of the net twice (including a free-position shot playing down a player after a yellow card) and Harvey registered the final goal of the game for the 12-6 win.
Dikos and Harvey each posted a game-high six points on five goals and a helper. Kallos added three points with two assists and Bulger contributed two points (one goal, one assist).Â
W&J more than doubled Franklin's shot total at 30-14, with Bulger accounting for nine of the 30. Harvey had eight shots, Dikos six, Kallos four and
Sierra Meyer the other three.
Harvey led with eight of the Presidents' 15 draw controls and also contributed six ground balls and six caused turnovers. Dikos (four) and Kallos (three) corralled the remaining seven draws for W&J.
Allegheny is the next opponent for W&J, with a 4 p.m. match scheduled for Wednesday, March 11 at Alexandre Stadium.
