W&J settles for split with Saint Vincent, takes season series

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Presidents recovered from a loss in the opener to post a 9-2 victory in the second game, earning a doubleheader split and taking the season series against Saint Vincent.

Washington & Jefferson improves to 16-7 on the season and 8-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

The first game saw W&J record just two hits in a 17-0 loss to the Bearcats.

In the nightcap, the Presidents amassed nine hits, including three for extra bases to salvage the series. Anthony Paladino drove in the first three runs of the game for W&J, on a two-out, two-run double to left center in the top of the third. His RBI ground out in the top of the fifth stretched the lead to 3-0 and plated Cory Bauer who led off the frame with a single.

W&J broke the game open with three runs in the top of the sixth. Kyle Smith led off with a single and stole second before scoring on a double to right by Jake Gordon. After a walk to Nick Morton, Dan Trettel sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out, allowing Bauer to bring home pinch-runner Justin Zak on a sacrifice fly to right, 5-0. Nick Gatins then singled to right field to drive home Morton and extend the lead to 6-0.

A solo homer in the bottom of the sixth got SVC on the board, but W&J responded with three more runs in the top of the seventh on a three-run home run by Nick Vento to straight-away center field. His homer came after Gannon Rooney was hit by a pitch and Paladino walked.

Nick Kolat picked up the win to move to 2-2 on the year. He went the first 6.0 innings, yielding just four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.

Gordon was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Paladino and Vento each tallied extra base hits and finished with three RBI and a run scored.

W&J travels to Grove City on Tuesday, April 14 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against the Wolverines.
