W&J takes two at Grove City, 5-4 and 5-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team used a pair of seventh-inning rallies to sweep a doubleheader at Grove City, 5-4 in the opener and 5-0 in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the Presidents improve to 18-7 on the season with a 10-4 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. W&J currently sits a game behind Waynesburg and this weekend's opponent, Thomas More, for first place in the league as both schools hold 11-3 marks in league action.

Kyle Smith delivered an RBI double to left field in the top of the seventh inning to bring home Nick Vento to give the Presidents the 5-4 win in the lid lifter.

The Presidents had built a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings. Smith scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run and then Jake Gordon scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Helbing to give W&J a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

A two-out, bases-loaded single by Michael Ruffing added two more runs in the fourth, but Gannon Rooney was thrown out at the plate trying to score after a throwing error by the shortstop allowed Ruffing to go to second.

The Wolverines battled back with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and the tying run in the sixth, setting the stage for Smith's game-winning double.

Tim Mulvey (3-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Jared Baird after working the final two innings and giving up three hits and an run with two strike outs. Baird pitched the first five innings, yielding three earned runs and striking out six while scattering eight hits.

Smith finished with a career-high four hits in going 4-for-4 with a double and stolen base in game one. Nick Vento turned in his 13th multi-hit game of the season, and third with three hits as he went 3-for-4 with a double. Ryan Sciullo posted his fifth multi-hit contest with a 2-for-3 day.

Riley Groves went the distance for the third time this season in his second shutout (plus a combined shutout) to improve to a PAC-leading 6-1 on the season. The sophomore righty struck out seven and surrendered just seven hits in the victory.

Rooney led off the nightcap with a single and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Vento. It would be the only run of the contest until W&J plated four insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Rooney began the seventh with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adam LaRue. After Vento was intentionally walked, both runners moved up on a Smith ground out before Gordon was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next batter, Nick Morton, was hit by a pitch and then the Presidents executed a rare triple steal, with Vento crossing home plate. The final blow of the inning came in the form of a two-run double by Dan Trettel, 5-0.

Grove City threatened with runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Groves induced a pop up and strike out to end the game.

Rooney went 3-for-3 in the second game with a walk, a double and two runs scored. It was the rookie's eight multi-hit game and first three-hit performance.

W&J will be at Thomas More for three games this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
