Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops three one-run games at Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Playing a rare tripleheader, the Washington & Jefferson baseball team dropped all three games by one run at Thomas More.

In a series with several potential Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament ramifications, W&J fell 4-3 in the opening nine-inning game before dropping a 1-0 decision in the first game of the two seven-inning games and a 5-4 defeat in eight innings of the finale.

The Presidents (18-10, 10-7 PAC) led 4-0 in through heading to the bottom of the sixth inning before allowing four runs to tie the game in the series capper. Cory Bauer delivered an RBI single in the fourth before Kyle Smith contributed a two-run double in the fifth and Justin Zak added a run-producing single in the same frame.

Two W&J errors led to the four-run sixth for the Saints (22-7, 14-3 PAC), who clinched the game and series sweep on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.

Tim Mulvey (3-1) took his first loss of the year, working the final 4.1 and giving up five hits and five runs (four earned) with five strike outs.

The middle game saw TMC scratch across one run in the bottom of the first and it hold up for the 1-0 victory. Jared Baird was the hard-luck loser in the game to fall to 2-3, despite pitching the distance and giving up just five hits and one run with four strike outs.

In the opener, W&J tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI ground out by Anthony Paladino, but TMC added two runs in the fourth. Gannon Rooney came in to score in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game, but a sac fly in the sixth proved to be the insurance run the Saints needed as another RBI ground out by Paladino plated W&J's last run in the eighth.

Joe Vita (3-1) was dealt the loss after giving up nine hits and four runs (two earned) in working 6.0 innings. For the first time this season, Vita's ERA is above 1.00, at 1.02.

Derek Helbing and Jake Gordon each had three hits on the day for the Presidents. Paladino and Kyle Smith each delivered two RBI.

The Presidents return to Ross Memorial Park to host Grove City at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.
