WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson softball team's winning streak improved to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Thiel, 9-1 and 1-0.
With the victories, the Presidents improve to 17-9 overall this season with a 10-4 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. Thiel falls to 12-14 on the year and 5-9 in league games.
Sadie Marak opened up the scoring in game one with a two-run homer to left field on a 1-0 pitch in the top of the first inning of her Senior Day games. The Presidents added two more runs in the bottom of the second, including a sacrifice fly by
Abby Cunningham.
An RBI single by
Morgan Figura in the bottom of the third pushed the lead to 5-0, and W&J responded to Thiel's lone run in the top of the fourth with three in the bottom of the frame. All three runs came with two outs and were highlighted by an RBI double by
Emily Watson and run-scoring singles by
Jen Bahm and Figura.
Marak's RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth brought the margin to 9-1, ending the game after the run-rule total was reached.
Marak finished the lid-lifter with a 3-for-4 showing, her first homer of the season, three RBI and two runs scored. Figura was 3-for-3 and drove in two and Watson collected a pair of hits and an RBI.
Krista McCartney worked all 5.0 innings, giving up just two hits and an earned run while striking out two to improve to 8-4.
The lone run of the night cap was scored on an RBI single through the right side by Bahm in the bottom of the sixth. Marak came in to score on the play after opening the inning with a single and later advancing to second on a passed ball and third on a sacrifice bunt by Watson.
Watson earned the win in relief to improve to 8-5 after working a perfect 2.0 innings with a strikeout. McCartney went the first five, allowing just two hits with a strike out.
Bahm, Figura, Marak and
Meghan Staab provided the hits for the Presidents in the victory.
W&J is set for a nonconference double dip at Muskingum on Sunday, April 19. First pitch in New Concord, Ohio has been moved up to 12 p.m. to attempt to beat projected rain showers.
