Presidents bounce back from game-one loss for road split

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson had its seven-game winning streak snapped in a 4-3 game one loss at Waynesburg, before rebounding to post a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

With the split, the Presidents move to 18-10 overall and 11-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, one game behind league leader Thomas More who is 10-4. W&J has one league doubleheader remaining, a 1 p.m. contest at Bethany to close out the conference slate on Saturday, April 25.

In the opener, the Presidents built a 3-1 lead after batting in the fifth, thanks to RBI singles by Sadie Marak and Emily Watson in the third and an RBI double by Jen Bahm in the fifth. Waynesburg answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 4-3 lead, which W&J was unable to overcome despite loading the bases with one out in the top of the sixth.

The Presidents collected 10 hits in the lid lifter, including a 3-for-3 showing by Chalese Wilson and two hits each from Breanna Gleason and Watson.

Krista McCartney (8-5) suffered the loss, yielding all four runs (earned) with four strike outs and seven hits.

Game two began much differently for the Presidents, as they sent 11 batters to the plate and used seven hits and took advantage of three Yellow Jacket errors to open up a 7-0 lead.

Bahm got the scoring started with a two-out RBI infield single and then Morgan Figura added another RBI single. An infield single by Megan Staab led to an RBI and an error on the play allowed Bahm to score to make it 4-0. A single by Wilson put runners on the corners and then Gleason and Abby Cunningham delivered back-to-back RBI singles, plus Gleason scored on a throwing error to cap the scoring, 7-0.

The Presidents tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth to build the 9-0 lead. A two-out single by Bahm sent Marak to third and then she scored on a fielding error by the second baseman. A Figura double put runners on second and third and Bahm scored when Staab reached on an error, 9-0.

W&J used 14 hits and five Waynesburg miscues in the win. Marak led the way with three hits, while Bahm and Figura added two apiece. Carie Guballa added her first career hit in the fifth inning.

Emily Watson pitched 7.0 innings in the victory, returning in relief in the fifth to finish the game. She gave up four hits and struck out a batter to improve to 10-5 on the season.

Before the Bethany series, W&J travels to Muskingum for a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday, April 23.
