W&J recovers from halftime deficit, earns 10-9 win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- W&J recovered from a four-goal deficit to earn a 10-9 win over Transylvania and clinch the third seed for the upcoming Ohio River Lacrosse Conference tournament.

Washington & Jefferson improves to 9-4 on the season and 7-2 in the ORLC and breaks the tie with the Pioneers for third place as Transylvania falls to 7-8 overall and 6-3 in the league. The Presidents will play second-seeded Thiel at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 24 at top-seeded Saint Vincent in the inaugural ORLC tournament. The two semifinal winners will play on Saturday, April 25 at 3 p.m. in Latrobe.

Transylvania built a 5-1 lead through the first 17 minutes of the game on Sunday, but Diana Harvey's second goal of the game made it 5-2 at 5:37. Harvey then assisted on the first goal of the game by Caroline Kallos less than a minute later to bring the score to 5-3. The two teams traded goals down the stretch as Ashley Bulger found the back of the net twice for the Presidents, who trailed 7-5 at intermission.

In the second half, Bulger needed just 35 seconds to score off of a Kallos feed and then Kallos recorded a goal at the 27:22-mark to tie the match at 7-7. Exactly one minute later, Bulger put the Presidents ahead for the first time, 8-7.

It was more than 10 minutes before either team would score again, but Transylvania tied the contest with 15:50 to play. Bulger and Alex Dikos posted the game's next two goals to push the margin to 10-8, which allowed W&J to hold on for the 10-9 win.

Bulger led all players with five points, all goals, to move her team-leading total to 46 on the season. Harvey and Kallos each added two goals and two assists, with Kallos overtaking the team lead at 23 helpers this year. Sierra Meyer chipped in two assists.

W&J led with 13 draw controls, including six and five by Kallos and Harvey, respectively.

Kelsey Roetenberg made four saves in the win to improve to 9-4 in her senior campaign. She also moves into a tie for fourth on the single-season W&J saves list at 126.
