BETHANY, W.Va. -- Despite a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference losses at Bethany, the Washington & Jefferson softball team has earned the number three seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament and chance to defend its 2014 crown.
W&J lost both games of the doubleheader at Bethany, 10-6 and 7-4, on Saturday, dropping to 11-7 in the conference and 18-14 overall. Bethany, who will clinch hosting rights with a win in the resumption of a game at Grove City, improves to 21-14 on the year and 12-5 in the PAC.
The Presidents opened up a 2-0 lead in game one, but the Bison struck back with seven runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 7-2 lead. With three runs in the fourth, W&J got within 7-5, but three more by the hosts in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach in favor of Bethany.
Abby Cunningham and
Meghan Staab each recorded two hits, two runs and an RBI in the lid-lifter, as Staab belted the first homer of her career in the seventh inning.
In the second game, W&J struck for four in the top of the first inning, including a homer by
Rachel Marx, an RBI double by
Morgan Figura and a two-run single for Staab. Bethany used one in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth to tie the game and three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.
Staab was one of five Presidents with two hits in the second game, leading the way with two RBI. Figura,
