W&J takes nonconference split at La Roche

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Presidents led late in game two, but settled for a nonconference split at La Roche after a 4-1 win in the opener and 7-5 loss in the nightcap.

With the split, the Washington & Jefferson baseball team moves to 22-12 on the season, with the 10th highest win total in program history. The Redhawks, receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and regular season champion of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, sit at 22-9.

Bryce Schnatterly took the ball to start game one, making his first collegiate start. The rookie went the distance, giving up just three hits and one run on a solo homer in the bottom of the first. He also struck out four and walked one in picking up the first victory of his career in his fourth appearance.

The Presidents got on the board with a run in the first when Gannon Rooney, who stole second and went to third on a passed ball, came in to steal home, 1-0. La Roche got its only run back on the solo shot in the bottom of the frame.

W&J plated two runs in the top of the fourth. Kyle Smith reached on a fielder's choice and stole second and third before scoring on an RBI single by Michael Ruffing. Derek Helbing later added the second run as Nick Morton reached on an error, 3-1. Another RBI single by Ruffing added an insurance run in the sixth.

Schnatterly retired 14 straight at one point before allowing a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh. He was able to force the final batter of the game to ground out to short to seal the victory.

Ruffing was the lone player in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Rooney and Nick Vento added W&J's two other hits.

Neither team lit the scoreboard in the second game until the Redhawks plated a run in the bottom of the fourth. W&J, however, answered with four in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. With one out and runners on the corners, Smith reached on an error that scored Rooney from third. A double by Nelson McKown brought in two runs and then Dan Trettel's RBI single capped the scoring.

A three spot from La Roche in the bottom of the fifth tied the game, but Rooney sent his third homer of the year over the left field fence to match Vento for the team lead and put the Presidents back in the lead. La Roche was able to score three runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 7-5 victory.

Rooney, McKown and Smith all posted two hits in the game.

Jordan Yates made his first career start in the second game as one of five pitchers the Presidents used on the day. He worked the first 2.0 scoreless innings and surrendered two hits with two strike outs. Matthew Heslin made his varsity debut with a scoreless inning in the third and Tyler Dean gave up a run on two hits in the fourth. Ben Langdon's varsity debut included two hits, two walks and three earned runs and Trevor Kerr (1-3) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on two hits and two walks in the sixth.

W&J hosts No. 2 Frostburg State (Md.) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28.
