SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Washington & Jefferson and Wittenberg needed an extra period to settle the final, but
Lauren Brown sent the Presidents home with a 3-2 overtime victory to open the 2015 season.
Brown scored off a feed from
Amanda Steffey just 2:57 into overtime to give W&J the win. It was the fourth game-winning goal of her career after she recorded three last season.
W&J (1-0) trailed, 2-1, past the midway point of the second half, but
Laura O'Malley scored on a rebound for her first collegiate goal, tying the game at 2-2 and sending the two squads to overtime.
Wittenberg (0-1) got on the board first with just over four minutes remaining in the first half, but Steffey answered the score 1:14 later, at the 32:03-mark, to lead to a 1-1 halftime gridlock. A Tigers goal after a scramble in front of the net 5:29 into the second half gave them the lead back, but O'Malley's goal knotted the game once again.
Steffey led all players with six shots (four on goal), while O'Malley contributed three shots. Brown's goal was the only other shot for the Presidents, who totaled 10. The two teams posted identical shot totals of three in the first half and six in the second half, but Wittenberg finished with the advantage on the evening thanks to a 4-1 margin in overtime.
Morgan Brozena earned the win in cage, the 19th of her career, making seven saves in the process.
The Presidents continue non-conference action at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 in Winchester, Va., at Shenandoah.
