WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Two first half goals by visiting Point Park proved to be too much for Washington & Jefferson to overcome in a 2-1 non-conference loss in the 2015 men's soccer opener at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents fall to 0-1 in begin the year thanks, in part, to the right leg of Lucas Godinho who scored both goals for the Pioneers in the 15th and 44th minutes.
Justin Nolfi cut the margin to 2-1 late in the 60th minute when he chipped past the keeper who came out to challenge following a long free ball by goalkeeper
Benny Wilt that played a couple of hops.
The Presidents had a penalty kick opportunity to tie with less than one minute to play, but
Justin Carter was stopped by PPU keeper Zak Borzovoy, which preserved the victory and improved the NAIA-member Pioneers to 2-0 this year.
Despite an 8-5 W&J lead on shots in the second half, a 6-1 deficit in the first led to PPU holding an 11-9 edge in the category for the game. Carter, Nolfi and
Jason Menni each recorded a pair of shots, while
Alex Blout,
Matt Kotkiewicz and
Paul Mokrzan each added one.
Wilt made five saves in the loss while playing all 90 minutes between the pipes.
The Presidents host Mount Aloysius on Friday, Sept. 4 for a 7 p.m. kick-off as non-conference action continues.
