WASHINGTON, Pa. -- In a game against Mount Aloysius that tallied eight yellow cards and one red, Washington & Jefferson was able to pull out the 2-1 win.
W&J evens its record at 1-1 on the young season with the victory, while the Mounties drop to 0-1 after their season-opening loss.
The first period opened with an even match as each side battled to be first on the board. At 38:43,
Scott Hanna was able to bury the first goal of the game, as well as the first goal of his college career, into the top left corner off a set play, unassisted.
Â
Halftime brought a 1-0 W&J lead, but also three total yellow cards through 45 minutes -- two for W&J and one for Mount Aloysius.
Â
The second half brought an increase in intensity and physicality between the two teams. At 62:09,
Jason Menni was able to solidify the Presidents' lead by robbing the ball from the Mounties' defense and skipping it over the keeper's hands and into the back of the net from 35 yards out.
Â
Two more yellow cards were issued to Mount Aloysius players, and then, around the 68:06 mark, Hanna received a red card. This meant that W&J would play the final 22 minutes man down.
Â
Between two more yellow cards dealt to their team, Mount Aloysius was able to turn a penalty kick into a goal.
Â
Although W&J accumulated one final yellow card, the team held onto their lead ending the game with a score of 2-1.
Hanna, Menni and
Tancrede Bugis each paced W&J with a pair of shots.
Benny Wilt picked up his first win as a President, making four saves in goal and allowing just the PK score.

Washington & Jefferson men's soccer will face Pitt-Greensburg in their next match at Alexandre Stadium at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 9.Â
