LATROBE, Pa. -- In just her second game as a President, sophomore
Jordan Toohey accounted for all of the offensive output to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 4-0 nonconference win at Pitt-Greensburg.
The victory moves W&J to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Bobcats drop to 0-2.
Toohey's four goals marks the first time a W&J women's soccer player has scored four goals in a match since Chrissy Marcius on Sept. 29, 2012 against Geneva. It was the first hat trick for the Presidents since Holly Shipley scored three goals on Nov. 2, 2013 at Thiel.
She put the red & black ahead for good in the 21st minute when she had a breakaway down the left side and beat the keeper to the lower right 90. It was the only score in the first half as the Presidents led, 1-0, through 45 minutes.
After beginning the second half on the sideline, Toohey re-entered 10 minutes into the period and scored two goals 1:26 apart in the 60th and 62nd minutes.
Mariah Lockard assisted on the 60' goal for her first helper this season. Both the second and third goals were struck just inside of the right post and crossbar, respectively.
The scoring was capped in the 76th minute when Toohey got behind the defense and put the ball in the upper left 90 one-on-one with the keeper.
Toohey finished with eight shots in the match, one more than the Bobcats registered as a team. Combined with
Tatiana Ruzzini (five shots), the two made up half of the Presidents' 26 shots.
Nicole Walters and
Ashton Grimm each posted three shots.
Maddie Potter earned her first win at W&J in her first start, making four saves in the shutout.
The Presidents return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 9, traveling to Frostburg State for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Bobcats.
NOTE: Due to field conditions on Pitt-Greensburg's campus, the match was held at Greater Latrobe High School.
