Second quarter rally leads Presidents past Wolverines, 59-55


GROVE CITY, Pa. -- After trailing 19-11 through 10 minutes, the Presidents used a 21-9 second quarter to take a four-point lead into halftime that held up as the final margin in a 59-55 win at Grove City.

With the win, the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team improves to 14-3 on the season, including a 9-1 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, good for second place in the league standings. Grove City drops to 7-10 and an even 5-5 in conference games.

The hosts controlled play in the first quarter, taking the 11-point advantage into the second period. An 8-0 run over the first 2:40 of the second period that included by a pair of layups from Ashley Mikelonis allowed W&J to tie the score at 19-19. Grove City responded with a 7-2 run, but W&J closed the half by utilizing an 11-2 spurt over the final 3:15 to take a 32-28 lead into the locker room.

The second half was played evenly as both teams scored 11 points in the third period and 16 points in the final stanza. With the Presidents leading, 48-44, with just over five minutes to play in regulation, Alyssa Riley knocked down a pair of three-pointers that pushed W&J ahead by a 10-point margin and helped hold off a late spurt from the Wolverines.

In the defensive battle, W&J shot just 31.7 percent (19-of-60) and Grove City hit on 33.8 percent (23-68). The two squads combined for 43 turnovers and 92 rebounds.

Rachel Bellhy led all players with 14 points, while also recording seven rebounds, a career-high four blocks and three steals. Amirah Moore recovered from an off day from the field to knock down 8-of-10 free-throw attempts to finish with 12 points. Danni Medovich reached double digits with 10 points and Danielle Parker pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

W&J returns to the Henry Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 27 for a 6 p.m. PAC meeting against Thiel. The Presidents topped the Tomcats, 81-50, in the first match-up of the season.
