GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team won both of its Presidents' Athletic Conference matches at the Grove City tri-match, besting Chatham 3-0 and outlasting the host Wolverines, 3-2.
The victories improve the Presidents to 13-4 on the season, including a 7-2 mark in league action. Scores against Chatham (5-15, 2-5) were 25-10, 25-21, 25-17, while the tallies against the Wolverines were 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 15-11.
Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf),
Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) and
Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) led the attack against Chatham with eight, seven and six kills, respectively, while all hitting above .300.
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) (15) and
Emily Toy (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) (14) combined to hand out 29 assists and
Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area)Â fired four service aces.
Defensively, Means had 17 digs, with
Sarah Dindak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Katheryn Rotthoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) each turning in nine digs. Lydic also shut down the Cougars attack with a game-best six blocks.
After opening up a 2-0 lead, W&J needed all five sets to take down Grove City, as Eich led the way with 15 blocks and
Lexi Hilzendeger (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) contributed 14 kills. Lydic joined the duo in double figures by scoring 11 kills. Toy (25) and O'Brien (22) handed out 47 combined assists and
Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) notched a pair of service aces.
Lydic once again had six blocks, while Bernesser and
Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) each secured three blocks. A quartet of Presidents reached double figures in digs, led by Means' 36. O'Brien turned in the double-double with 22 digs, with Freeman and Coughlin contributing 16 and 10, respectively.
The Presidents will head to Bethany (W.Va.) for a PAC tri-match with Waynesburg on Wednesday, Oct. 5. W&J will play the Yellow Jackets at 6 p.m. before tangling with the host Bison at 8 p.m.
