BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Presidents went the full five sets in a 3-2 loss against Bethany after earning a 3-0 sweep of Waynesburg earlier in the day at a Presidents' Athletic Conference tri-match in West Virginia.
With the split, the Washington & Jefferson volleyball team moves to 14-5 overall and 8-3 in the PAC. W&J's next action will be on Friday, Oct. 7, hosting Thomas More at 7 p.m. on Homecoming weekend. The two teams met earlier this season in Kentucky, with the defending league champion Saints outlasting W&J for a 3-2 victory.
The Bethany match saw W&J win the opener 25-23, before dropping a 25-14 decision in the second set and rallying to take a 2-1 lead after a 25-22 win in the third game. Bethany pulled out the victory after 25-23 and 15-10 wins in the final two sets.
Lexi Hilzendeger (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) upped her career high in kills, turning in 18 in the loss against the Bison, including eight in the first set.
Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) also turned in a career-high kill performance with 17 on a .309 hitting percentage thanks to four in each of the second, third and fourth sets. She also added four blocks.
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) set a career high with 37 assists earlier in the day against Waynesburg and then blew past that with 50 helpers in the Bethany match.
Defensively,
Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) led five Presidents in double figures in digs with 30. O'Brien completed the double-double at 13 digs.
Madison Lydic (Eric, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) recorded eight blocks (three solo) to reach that number for the fourth time this season and fifth of her career.
Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) added four blocks plus eight kills and Eich also made four blocks.
Scores against the Yellow Jackets were 25-12, 25-13, 25-16.
Bernesser and her .500 hitting percentage led the way with nine kills against Waynesburg. Hilzendeger and Eich each added eight. O'Brien and
Katheryn Rotthoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) each recorded three service aces in the match.
Means tallied a match-high 18 digs, while Lydic had five blocks.
