PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Chatham scored in the 103rd minute to defeat Washington & Jefferson in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The loss drops W&J to 5-3-2 overall and 0-1 in league matches, while Chatham improves to 6-1-2 this year and 1-0 in conference action. The victory was the first for the Cougars over the Presidents after 18 consecutive losses to begin the series.
The hosts struck first, just 8:04 into play when Megan Sieg scored an unassisted goal. W&J answered back 8:20 later when
Josie Madden (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) notched her fourth goal of the year off an assist from
Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park).
Both teams were unable to find the game-winning goal for the next 85:50 before the Cougars' Kelsey Calamaro sent the home team to the victory off of a corner kick by Skylar Benjamin at 102:14.
In total, Chatham held a 33-26 advantage in shots, thanks to a healthy 18-9 margin in the first half. Madden took eight shots to pace the Presidents, while
Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) added five.
Allison Rinehimer took the loss in goal, making 13 saves in 102:14 between the pipes.
W&J travels to Grove City on Wednesday, Oct. 5 for a 1:30 p.m. PAC match.
